A look at the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 25654ST
3 min read
The early 1980s saw the birth of several Royal Oak models with complications: Reference 25572 displays both the day of the week and the day of the month. A more advanced version with a Perpetual Calendar was also launched, under reference 5554 / 25554 (later becoming 25654).
The model is powered by the automatic caliber ref. 2120/2800 (derived from the Jaeger LeCoultre JLC 920) initially developed in 1978, and remained the world's thinnest automatic Perpetual Calendar of that time.
Caliber characteristics:
The dial features four sub-counters:
• Day indication • Month indication • Day of the week indication • Moon phase indication
The first-generation dials are smooth, without guilloché tapestry and without tritium, featuring baton hands.
Two generations are identifiable (Series C and Series D), generally recognizable by the Audemars Piguet typography that evolved in the early 1990s.
The case remains faithful to the Royal Oak Jumbo's diameter, retaining a 39MM profile.
Production was halted around 1993, with the last units sold until 1998. The caliber was eventually replaced by reference 2120/2802, reintroducing the leap year cycle display.
The total number of units produced reached 800 pieces, distributed as follows:
The adjustment of the sub-counters is done by pressing buttons located along the side of the case (two on the left sides, and one on the right).
